Reminders

Ask Moe to remind you of anything: "remind me at three to call Dan", "every weekday at nine, ask me what the day is for". Moe's thinking part keeps the schedule. When one comes due it takes the amber glow, even with Let Moe bring things up on its own switched off, because you asked for it, and it is sent to every chat you ticked under Running in the background › Reminders.

A repeating reminder survives Moe being closed and the Mac being asleep: it fires once, the next time Moe is running. A one-off reminder does not wait for you: if the Mac is shut when its minute comes and is still shut two minutes later, that reminder is dropped rather than fired late. A reminder that came due while Moe was not running is shown when Moe is next open, with when it was for (Earlier, at 3:00 PM: …); one more than a day old is history rather than a reminder, and is written to the log instead.

A reminder Moe was interrupted in the middle of is said anyway. If Moe's thinking part restarts while one of your reminders is being worked on, Moe notices on the way back up and says it, once, as long as it is less than a quarter of an hour late. Past that it is left alone, because a nine o'clock stand-up arriving mid-afternoon is worse than silence, and the next occurrence goes at its normal time.

With Away, a reminder set on this Mac fires from your cloud computer while the Mac is shut, at its minute, and reaches the chats you ticked; a reminder you set from your phone appears on this Mac as well. Whichever of the two is awake says it, never both. See Away.

Settings › Reminders#

Asking is the quickest way, but Settings › Reminders is where you can see everything at once and change it without saying a word. Two lists.

Yours is everything you asked for. Each one says what it does, how often (Every weekday, Every 2 hours, Once), when it will next happen (Next tomorrow at 9:08 am), and where it goes (Spoken here, and sent to the chats you picked or Sent to Telegram). Beside it: Pause (and Resume), Run now if you want to see what it produces without waiting, and Remove, which asks once, Really remove or Keep.

The "next" line is careful about the difference between waiting and not going to happen. A reminder you paused says Paused. One that has run the number of times you asked for says Finished. One set up for a different brain than Moe is on now says Skipped every time and asks you to remove it and make it again. And if the part of Moe that runs the clock is not running at that moment, a note at the top of the page says nothing will fire until it is back, rather than every row quietly promising a time it cannot keep.

Moe's own upkeep is what Moe runs to stay current: reading what changed, learning about you, watching the things you asked it to watch, checking the pages you asked it to watch, keeping your chat apps connected, picking up work handed back from Moe Away, and the word before a meeting starts. They are listed so nothing is hidden, and they have no buttons: what you can change about them is what Moe may read, and that lives under Running in the background.

New reminder#

New reminder starts from one of Moe's sixteen templates: A morning briefing, Only the mail that matters, A weekly look back, A nudge when work starts, Remind me to…, Winding down, News on one subject, Bills and renewals, Watch a price, Watch other companies, Keep a habit going, Water and a stretch, A week of meals, Learn a little daily, Something to reflect on, and Something worth knowing. Pick one and it asks its own questions: what to remind you, what time, which days, where to send it.

Call it, under the questions, is the one thing filled in for you: the template's own heading, yours to change. It is what the row is called, and what stops a second morning briefing from silently replacing the first. Nothing else is filled in for you: every question is blank until you answer it, and Create stays greyed out until they all are, with the line Every question needs an answer — Moe does not fill any of them in for you. A form that arrives pre-filled is a form you can tap straight through.

Times are written as 24-hour HH:MM, 08:00, 18:30, and Moe says so if you write one it cannot read, before anything is created. Where it goes is Moe, here (spoken and on screen on this Mac, plus whichever chats you ticked under Running in the background) or a single chat app on its own. Only apps you have actually connected are offered.

A reminder made here is exactly the same kind of thing as one you asked for out loud: same schedule, same amber glow, same "not now" and "stop reminding me about that".
