The day
One Friday, from the kitchen to the water.
Lena is a designer. Her friends are swimming at two. Everything between is Moe.
9:15 am
She asks in one ordinary sentence.
No list to write, no app to open. Moe has already been through her mail, her messages and her calendar, so it answers with what is actually there.
Lena“What have I actually got on today?”
Moe“I went through your mail, your messages and your calendar. Hale is chasing the invoice, Sara needs the packaging export, and the studio call is at half ten. Priya wants you in the water by two. The invoice I can do now; the export needs your eyes first.”
10:20 am
Before the call, it briefs her.
It goes back through the thread, the people on the invite and what was agreed last time, and tells her the three things that will come up.
Lena“What do I need to know before this one?”
Moe“Packaging review. Sara sent revised labels on Tuesday and you have not opened them. Marcus will ask for the print date. You told him the twelfth, back in June, on the call you took from the car.”
10:30 am
On a call, it answers the question for her.
Someone asks what she shipped this week. She does not have to remember. It reads her own week back to her, off her mail and her calendar, while the call carries on.
Lena“What did I get done this week?”
Moe“Monday, guidelines. Wednesday, packaging. Thursday, you won Ellis.”
12:05 pm
She asks it to fix the file. It uses the Mac.
It looks at the document open in front of her, finds the setting that broke it, and works the menus itself. Her hands never leave her lap.
Lena“The PDF came back wrong. Sort it out?”
Moe“The type went out as pictures. Doing it now.”
1:40 pm
On her way out, she hands over the rest.
The car is already outside. Moe has Sara’s export ready and shows her what is going out and to whom. She says yes on the doorstep and leaves the rest of the afternoon with it.
Moe“Sara’s export, to Sara and Marcus. You told me in June that Marcus always wants the print files too. Ready when you are.”
Lena“That’s the one. Send it.”
2:00 pm
Two o’clock, and she is early.
The export goes out while the car is still on the road, because she has already said yes to it. She gets to the sand with an empty afternoon.
